JOB SUMMARY Accepts responsibility and accountability for the delivery of care through the use of the nursing process ensuring safe, quality, and continuity of care is maintained. Directs and guides patient teaching and ancillary personnel to include exercising independent judgment in directing the work of others. Cares for all types of patients on assigned unit, while maintaining professional nursing standards. Performs select respiratory care procedures including oxygen therapy, and breathing treatments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Assesses patients and identifies physical, psycho social, spiritual, cultural, environmental, and educational needs.
B. Provides direct patient care which reflects use of the nursing process and established procedures. Promotes patient comfort, safety, and dignity.
C. Develops a written plan of care through nursing diagnosis which is initiated within 24 hours of admission, reviews daily and updates as necessary. Provides assistance to LPNs in developing care plans for their patients.
D. Implements the plan of care based on standards of practice, hospital policies and procedures,
E. and patient/family needs.
G. Evaluates patient/family response and outcomes to nursing interventions.
H. Provides or participates in learning opportunities to meet the educational needs of the patient and family by assessing the learning needs and formulating and initiating a teaching plan to meet those needs.
I. Documents and communicates patient information in as accurate and timely manner.
J. Assists patient with ADLs and nutritional needs.
K. Begins patient/family discharge plan on admission and finalizes discharge plans prior to discharge.
L. Participates in activities which promote better patient care, nursing development, and professional growth.
M. Demonstrates principles of therapeutic communication skills and promotes positive relationships within the department, and other departments, and with hospital guests and clients.
N. Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary health care team to achieve desired patient care outcomes.
O. Maintains accountability for nursing care by: identifying and reporting patient problems, participating in unit meetings, and attending appropriate in services and education programs. (Specific for 13-week agency Staff)
P. Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated age groups.
Q. Supports and abides by all PHO, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.
R. Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission and philosophy of Mitchell County Regional Health Center and Mercy Health Network.
S. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Clinical Nurse Manager and Assistant Administrator/CNO and/or Administrative Team.
T. Demonstrates Service Excellence and Behavior Standards Expectations in all interactions with all parties.
U. Adapts positively to the ever changing health care environment by supporting technology and process changes.
V. Documents patient information in the electronic/paper record in an accurate, timely manner.
W. Maintains active log-ons/passwords for computer software systems that support patient care and education.
X. Regular and reliable attendance is expected.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education:
1. Graduate of an accredited program in professional nursing.
2. Current R.N. licensure in the State of Iowa.
B. Experience:
1. Previous experience in a health care setting is preferred.
C. Special Skills & Aptitudes:
a. Verbal and written communication skills.
b. Demonstrates knowledge and support for the principles of customer relations in daily activities with others.
c. Maintains certification in CPR. If Agency Staff is hired for a specialty area, the following certifications will be required: OB NRP; ER ACLS, (TNCC preferred); CCU/Monitored Bed ACLS.
d. Develops competency to provide care within the assigned unit to the population described in the scope of care.
e. Must have basic computer skills.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
A. Able to walk continuously and stand very frequently.
B. Able to lift, push/pull 10-20 pounds very frequently and very frequently to continuously 30-60 pounds.
C. Able to perform detailed tasks very frequently with continuous interruptions.
